What next for the Liberal Party of Canada?

Liberal Party of Canada

After all these weeks of campaigning, the 2008 Canadian federal election is over. The only real upset is that the Liberal party has lost seats all around. That’s right. No Green seats, no Conservative majority, just $300 million of taxpayer money spent on the harshest leadership review the Grits have ever faced.

With nothing changed, other than who sits where in the House of Commons, the question on everyone’s lips is, “is he going to resign or be booted?” After all, Stéphane Dion appears to be the first Liberal leader in over 130 years to not serve as Prime Minister, and has presided over a 24 seat drop.

More than that, but Dion has all but written a blank cheque for Stephen Harper’s government in the upcoming parliament. His conciliation speech promised “full support” for the Harper ministry, which will no doubt anger or upset many Liberals who won’t already be annoyed with the party’s poor performance in this election. I smell blood in the water, and no doubt a leadership review and new convention will be on the way shortly.

It’s a shame. I’ve always thought Dion to be a good politician. However, he is no leader. But after a loss that puts John Turner’s loss in a good light, it’s time for a leader who isn’t afraid to take charge and stop the Conservative Party from running roughshod all over Canada. Sorry, Stéphane, but the Cons were right about you.
