Establishing a blogging regimen

Anyone who follows my blog knows how sporadic it is. Sometimes I can go a week (or more) without posting anything; other times, I might shoot off five posts, rapid-fire. Obviously, I need to set some kind of blogging regimen for myself, to ensure that I not only keep posting, but that I provide interesting content that'll keep you coming back for more.

Let's start off with some key questions to establish just what this blog is all about. That should help planning out this regimen by establishing the requirements that the plan must fulfill. Sounds about right…

  1. What is this blog about? coldacid dot net is about my projects, my interests in tech, social networking, Toastmasters, and my life. Roughly in that order.
  2. Who is my target audience? Other tech people, primarily.
  3. What do I enjoy writing about? Games, tech, Toastmasters, fiction, politics. In no particular order.

Next, let's look at the requirements of a blog. So, what are the requirements of my blog (or anyone else's, for that matter)?

  1. Provide readers with interesting content, that they want to read about.
  2. Provide yourself with an outlet to share what you think needs to be said.

That's very high level. But it gives us a starting point for determining the actual requirements for coldacid dot net. I need to provide interesting content to technical minded people, and it should be tied into my projects and interesting tech/social network stuff. At the same time, I need to be able to share other things, like stories I write, Toastmasters, and games, and in a way that will keep those tech people happy and interested.

Now that we have some idea of why I have the blog in the first place, and the requirements that must be met, it's time to figure out how to focus on how to commit to the blog and keep the updates coming, and at a meaningful pace. I'd love to say to just post something every day, but we all know that works as well as making a New Year's Resolution — while I might just do that for a couple weeks, eventually things will return to how they are at the moment.

Despite that, my idea is to establish a base line for blog posts each week. A minimum of three posts a week, one each on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday sounds good. And to ensure that I don't just post any old crap, some topic guidelines will help ensure that my blog maintains its value for everyone. So, Monday will see a tech post, whether about my projects, game development, or the social networking world I've entered. Wednesdays will be communication and/or marketing, and so very likely about Toastmasters. Finally, Fridays will see another tech post.

The rest of the week, I can post if there's something that interests me enough to share with the world. Politics, events, or even more tech stuff, if I want. (I can still do that on MWF, but only after I've posted my mandatory post of the day.) We'll start this regimen tomorrow, as if we start today, then I've already blown it, as this isn't a tech post.

If you have any ideas about how I can improve my blogging (perhaps there's some question or requirement I missed, or you'd just like to suggest some other things I might be interested in covering) please let me know! After all, the great thing about blogs and commenting is how easy we can share ideas.
